How could melting ice make warming worse instead of being only a result of warming?

01 · Text difficulty by level / 各级别文本难度

同一篇文章提供五档写作目标;本文继续保留 PDF 中“从短句到长句、从常用词到正式词汇”的渐进逻辑。

01

Rank + comparative compounds 序数与比较级复合词

ties for the tenth-lowest minimum

“tenth-lowest” combines an ordinal with a superlative idea: only nine years had lower minimums. Remember: tie for + rank, tie with + another year. 注意“第十低”= 前面有9个更低的年份。

02

Fronted predicate (inversion) 表语前置

More telling than any single year is the trend

Normal order: The trend is more telling than any single year. Putting the adjective first adds emphasis and is typical of formal writing. 表语前置是正式文体常用的强调手法。

03

Contrast and logical connectors 对比与逻辑连接词

whereas dark, open water absorbs most of it; as ice retreats, the ocean takes up more heat

Semicolons, whereas, as and in turn link ideas without new sentences; follow the logic step by step. 先抓住 whereas 的对比,再看 as 引出的因果链。

04

Appositives that summarize 概括性同位语

a self-reinforcing cycle known as a feedback loop

The noun phrase after the comma sums up the whole previous clause and names it. 逗号后的名词短语是对前面整件事的概括与命名。

02 · Long-sentence breakdown / 长难句解析

SENTENCE 1
More telling than any single year is the trend: the twenty lowest minimums have all occurred in the past two decades, from 2007 through 2026, a persistence that points to long-term warming rather than ordinary year-to-year swings.
比任何单独一年都更说明问题的是这一趋势:最低的二十个极小值全都出现在过去二十年里,即2007年至2026年,这种持续性指向长期变暖,而不是寻常的逐年波动。
  • 倒装 Inversion: [More telling than any single year] is the trend = The trend is more telling than any single year。
  • 冒号后解释趋势:the twenty lowest minimums have all occurred …(all 放在助动词后)。
  • a persistence that points to … 是前面整件事的同位语;rather than = 而不是。
  • year-to-year 是复合形容词,修饰 swings。
SENTENCE 2
Bright sea ice reflects much of the sunlight that strikes it, whereas dark, open water absorbs most of it; as ice retreats, the ocean takes up more heat, which in turn melts additional ice, a self-reinforcing cycle known as a feedback loop.
明亮的海冰会反射照到它上面的大部分阳光,而深色的开阔海水则吸收其中的大部分;随着冰层后退,海洋吸收更多热量,这反过来又融化更多冰,形成一种被称为反馈循环的自我强化过程。
  • whereas 表对比:reflects … ↔ absorbs …;分号分隔两个相关的完整句。
  • that strikes it:定语从句修饰 sunlight。
  • as ice retreats 表伴随;which in turn melts additional ice:非限制性定语从句,which 指代前面整个情况。
  • a self-reinforcing cycle (that is) known as … :同位语 + 过去分词短语。
SENTENCE 3
The figure ties for the tenth-lowest minimum in the satellite record, which dates to 1978, and matches the totals recorded in 2008, 2010, and 2025.
这一数字与2008年、2010年和2025年并列,为卫星记录中第十低的极小值。
  • 同一主语 The figure 带两个并列动词:ties for … 和 matches …。
  • which dates to 1978:非限制性定语从句,修饰 the satellite record。
  • recorded in 2008, 2010, and 2025:过去分词短语修饰 totals。

03 · Vocabulary & sentence usage / 词汇与句型用法

tie for / tie with

Tie for + rank (tie for the tenth-lowest); tie with + another item. American news also says “tied” as an adjective: nearly tied with last year’s.

e.g. Two runners tied for second place.

minimum / maximum (plural)

Plural is minima/maxima in formal science, minimums/maximums in everyday news. 科学文体用 minima,新闻常用 minimums。

e.g. The report lists the yearly maximums.

reflect vs. absorb vs. take up

Ice reflects light; water absorbs or takes up heat. Take up is the plain phrasal verb for absorb.

e.g. Dark roofs absorb more heat than white ones.

in turn

Means “as the next step in a chain of events”, 反过来。

e.g. Higher prices reduce sales, which in turn lowers profits.

the previous year’s (ellipsis)

“nearly matching the previous year’s” leaves out the noun maximum. Possessive without a noun avoids repetition. 所有格后省略了名词。

e.g. This year’s harvest is larger than last year’s.

How sea ice is measured 如何测量海冰

Scientists usually report sea ice “extent”, the total area of ocean where at least 15 percent of the surface is ice. Continuous satellite records based on microwave sensors began in late 1978. The Arctic sea ice minimum usually comes in September and the maximum in March.

科学家通常报告海冰“范围(extent)”,即海面至少有15%被冰覆盖的海洋总面积。基于微波传感器的连续卫星记录始于1978年底。北极海冰通常在9月达到最小,3月达到最大。

The ice–albedo feedback 冰—反照率反馈

Albedo is the share of sunlight a surface reflects. Snow-covered ice can reflect most incoming sunlight, while open ocean reflects only about 6 percent. Less ice means more heat absorbed, which melts more ice: a reinforcing feedback loop.

反照率是表面反射阳光的比例。被雪覆盖的海冰可反射大部分入射阳光,而开阔海水只反射约6%。冰越少,吸收的热越多,又融化更多的冰,形成正反馈循环。

Arctic amplification 北极放大效应

Over recent decades the Arctic has warmed roughly three to four times faster than the global average. Losing reflective ice is one important reason, which is why changes in sea ice are watched so closely.

近几十年来,北极变暖的速度大约是全球平均水平的三到四倍。失去具有反射作用的冰是重要原因之一,所以海冰变化备受关注。

Does melting sea ice raise sea level? 海冰融化会使海平面上升吗?

Not much. Sea ice already floats, like ice cubes in a glass of water, so melting it barely changes the water level. Ice on land, such as the Greenland ice sheet, is different: when it melts, the water flows into the ocean and raises sea level.

影响很小。海冰本来就漂浮在水面上,就像杯中的冰块,融化后水位几乎不变。陆地上的冰(如格陵兰冰盖)则不同:融化的水流入海洋,会使海平面上升。
