If a team is behind by four points late in the game, why might a field goal not be enough?

01 · Text difficulty by level / 各级别文本难度

同一篇文章提供五档写作目标;本文继续保留 PDF 中“从短句到长句、从常用词到正式词汇”的渐进逻辑。

01

Varied verbs for “beat” 表示“击败”的丰富动词

fended off the Los Angeles Rams

Sports writers avoid repeating beat. Edged (won by little), fended off (stopped a comeback), outlasted (survived a long contest) and routed (won easily) each show how the game went. 动词本身就传达了比赛过程。

02

Idioms and fixed phrases 习语与固定搭配

a result that stood in stark contrast to the preceding days

Stand in stark contrast to = be very different from. Fixed phrases must be learned as chunks, not word by word. 整体记忆更有效。

03

Superlative + of 最高级 + of 结构

the narrowest of margins

“the + superlative + of + plural noun” (the best of friends, the narrowest of margins) stresses that the quality is extreme. 强调程度极端。

04

Reduced clauses 缩略的从句

a team trailing by that amount, or by less

“a team trailing …” = a team that is trailing …. The parenthetical “or by less” adds a second case without a new clause. 现在分词短语替代定语从句。

02 · Long-sentence breakdown / 长难句解析

SENTENCE 1
The Chicago Bears closed out the weekend with a comfortable 27–7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night at home, a result that stood in stark contrast to the preceding days, when games were repeatedly decided by the narrowest of margins.
芝加哥熊队在周一晚上主场以27比7轻松击败费城老鹰队,为这个周末收官;这一结果与此前几天形成鲜明对比,当时的比赛一再以极小的分差见分晓。
  • 主干: The Bears closed out the weekend with a comfortable … victory over …。
  • a result that stood in stark contrast to …:同位语 + 定语从句,概括前面的比分。
  • the preceding days, when …:when 引导定语从句,修饰 days。
  • were repeatedly decided by …:被动语态;the narrowest of margins = 极小的分差。
SENTENCE 2
On Sunday night, the Denver Broncos fended off the Los Angeles Rams, 30–26, while earlier in the day the Washington Commanders edged the Seattle Seahawks 33–31 and the Baltimore Ravens outlasted the Dallas Cowboys 34–31.
SENTENCE 3
Such margins hinge on football’s scoring structure: because a field goal is worth three points, a team trailing by that amount, or by less, can tie or win with a single successful kick, which keeps tight games tense until the final seconds.
这样的分差取决于橄榄球的得分结构:因为一次射门得分值三分,落后三分或更少的球队只要一脚成功的射门就能扳平或获胜,这使胶着的比赛直到最后几秒都充满紧张感。
  • hinge on = depend on;冒号后解释原因。
  • because 从句:a field goal is worth three points(be worth + 数量)。
  • a team trailing by that amount, or by less:现在分词短语作后置定语,or by less 补充另一种情况。
  • which keeps tight games tense:非限制性定语从句,which 指前面整件事。

03 · Vocabulary & sentence usage / 词汇与句型用法

decided by three points or fewer

Points are countable, so use fewer, not less (formal usage). “Win by a margin of three points.” 可数名词 points 用 fewer。

e.g. The game was decided by two points or fewer.

beat / defeat / top / edge / outlast

Beat is the plain verb; defeat is more formal; top and edge are short headline verbs; edge implies a narrow win.

e.g. The home team edged its rival by one goal.

slate

In American sports, a slate is the set of games on one day or week: Sunday’s slate. 一天或一轮的赛程。

e.g. Saturday’s slate includes six matches.

tie vs. draw

American English says tie (a tied game, tie the score); British English often says draw. Both mean the score is equal at the end.

e.g. The teams tied 1–1.

close out

Close out a game or weekend = finish it, often with a strong result. 收官;结束。

e.g. The singer closed out the show with her biggest hit.

How scoring works in the NFL 橄榄球怎么得分

A touchdown is worth six points, followed by one point for a kick or two for a run or pass. A field goal is three points and a safety is two. Because of these values, margins of three and seven points are especially common, and a game within eight points is called a one-score game.

达阵(touchdown)得6分,随后踢球加1分,或用跑/传方式加2分;射门(field goal)得3分,安全分(safety)得2分。因为这些分值,3分和7分的分差特别常见,分差在8分以内的比赛称为“一个回合的比赛(one-score game)”。

The NFL week 一周的赛程

The regular season has 17 games per team spread over 18 weeks. Most games are played on Sunday afternoons, with a Sunday night game, a Monday night game and often a Thursday night game, which is why one weekend can end on Monday. Monday Night Football has been a tradition since 1970.

常规赛每队打17场,分布在18周内。大多数比赛在周日下午进行,另有周日晚、周一晚和常见的周四晚比赛,所以一个“周末”可能到周一才结束。《周一橄榄球之夜》自1970年起成为传统。

Overtime and ties 加时赛与平局

If the score is level after four quarters, a regular-season game goes to overtime of up to ten minutes. If it is still level, the game ends in a tie. This is why “tie” can describe both a way to equalize the score and an official result.

四节结束时若比分相同,常规赛会进入最长10分钟的加时赛;若仍然相同,比赛以平局(tie)结束。所以 tie 既可以指“扳平比分”,也可以指一种正式的比赛结果。

Sports language: from nail-biter to blowout 体育报道用语

Writers describe closeness with words like nail-biter and squeaker, and one-sided games with blowout or rout. A nail-biter is so tense that people bite their nails; a rout is a crushing win. Learning these pairs helps you read a headline in seconds.

记者用 nail-biter、squeaker 形容胶着的比赛,用 blowout、rout 形容一边倒的比赛。nail-biter 字面是“让人咬指甲的比赛”,rout 指压倒性的胜利。掌握这些词对,几秒钟就能读懂标题。
