Why might a wider view help astronomers discover things they were not expecting?

01 · Text difficulty by level / 各级别文本难度

同一篇文章提供五档写作目标;本文继续保留 PDF 中“从短句到长句、从常用词到正式词汇”的渐进逻辑。

01

Dense noun phrases 高密度名词短语

a 300-megapixel infrared camera whose field of view is about 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope

Premodifiers (300-megapixel infrared) plus a “whose” clause pack many facts into one noun phrase. 先找到核心名词 camera,再逐层读修饰语。

02

Abstract science vocabulary 抽象科学词汇

illuminate two of cosmology’s most persistent puzzles

“Illuminate” is used figuratively (make clear), and words like cosmology, persistent and abundance come mostly from Latin. 注意比喻义:illuminate ≠ 照亮,而是“阐明”。

03

Appositives 同位语

the unexplained force that appears to be driving the universe’s expansion at an accelerating pace

The phrase after the comma renames dark energy. Appositives let a writer define a term without a separate sentence. 逗号后的成分是在解释前面的名词。

04

Comparison structures 比较结构

far more rapidly than was previously feasible

“than was previously feasible” has no subject: it means “than it was previously feasible [to do so]”. 注意 than 后省略了主语。

02 · Long-sentence breakdown / 长难句解析

SENTENCE 1
Its main instrument is a 300-megapixel infrared camera whose field of view is about 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, a leap that should allow astronomers to survey billions of galaxies far more rapidly than was previously feasible.
它的主要仪器是一台3亿像素的红外相机,其视野比哈勃太空望远镜的视野大约大100倍,这一飞跃应能让天文学家比以往可能的速度快得多地巡测数十亿个星系。
  • 主干 Main clause: Its main instrument is a … camera。
  • whose field of view is … 定语从句,whose 表示“该相机的”。
  • about 100 times larger than that of …:倍数 + 比较级 + than;that of = the field of view of(避免重复)。
  • a leap that … 是整个前面内容的同位语,概括“这是一次飞跃”。
  • allow sb to do;far more rapidly than was previously feasible:than 后省略主语。
SENTENCE 2
Researchers hope the data will illuminate two of cosmology’s most persistent puzzles: the nature of dark energy, the unexplained force that appears to be driving the universe’s expansion at an accelerating pace, and the abundance of planets orbiting stars other than the Sun.
研究人员希望这些数据能够阐明宇宙学中两个最长期存在的难题:一是暗能量的本质,即那种似乎正在以加速的步伐推动宇宙膨胀的未知力量;二是围绕太阳以外恒星运行的行星有多丰富。
  • hope + (that) 从句,省略 that。
  • 冒号后列出两个并列成分:① the nature of dark energy …;② the abundance of planets …。
  • the unexplained force that … 是 dark energy 的同位语;appears to be driving = 似乎正在推动。
  • orbiting stars … 现在分词短语修饰 planets;other than = 除了…以外。
SENTENCE 3
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off on August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, beginning a journey to a vantage point roughly a million miles from Earth.
NASA的南希·格雷斯·罗曼太空望远镜于8月30日搭乘SpaceX猎鹰重型火箭从佛罗里达的肯尼迪航天中心升空,开启了前往距地球约一百万英里的观测点的旅程。
  • 主干 Main clause: the Telescope lifted off … aboard a rocket from …。
  • beginning a journey … 现在分词短语,表示随之发生的动作(结果/伴随)。
  • a vantage point roughly a million miles from Earth:roughly a million miles from Earth 后置修饰 vantage point。

03 · Vocabulary & sentence usage / 词汇与句型用法

X times + comparative + than

“about 100 times larger than that of Hubble” = 比哈勃大约大100倍。Use that of / those of to avoid repeating a noun.

e.g. This telescope’s mirror is twice as wide as that of the old one.

lift off / launch / aboard

A rocket lifts off or is launched; things are carried aboard (= on board) it. 火箭“升空”用 lift off。

e.g. Three astronauts will lift off aboard a new spacecraft.

survey (verb)

Survey as a verb means to study a large area systematically; as a noun it is a questionnaire or a sky survey. 注意动词重音在第二音节。

e.g. The team will survey the coastline by drone.

named for / named after

American news prefers “named for”; British usage prefers “named after”. Both mean 以…命名。

e.g. The school is named for a local teacher.

other than

Means “except” or “apart from”: planets orbiting stars other than the Sun.

e.g. No one other than the pilot knew the code.

Roman and Hubble: same mirror, wider view 罗曼与哈勃:同样大的镜面,更宽的视野

Roman’s main mirror is 2.4 meters across, the same size as Hubble’s. The difference is the camera: Roman looks at a far larger patch of sky in a single image, so it is a survey telescope rather than a close-up one. The mission was long known as WFIRST and was renamed in 2020 to honor Nancy Grace Roman (1925–2018), NASA’s first chief of astronomy, who helped plan Hubble.

罗曼望远镜的主镜直径为2.4米,与哈勃相同。区别在于相机:罗曼一次拍摄的天区大得多,因此是“巡天”而不是“特写”式望远镜。该任务长期被称为 WFIRST,2020年改名以纪念南希·格雷斯·罗曼(1925–2018)。她是NASA首任天文学主管,参与规划了哈勃望远镜。

The L2 point: a parking spot a million miles away 日地L2点

Roman is heading for the Sun–Earth L2 point, about 1.5 million kilometers (roughly 930,000 miles) from Earth on the side away from the Sun. From there the Sun, Earth and Moon all lie in the same direction, so one sunshield can block their heat and light. This matters for an infrared telescope, which must stay very cold. The James Webb Space Telescope also operates near L2.

罗曼将前往日地L2点,位于地球背向太阳一侧约150万公里(约93万英里)处。从那里看,太阳、地球和月球都在同一方向,一块遮阳罩就能挡住它们的热和光。这对必须保持低温的红外望远镜很重要。詹姆斯·韦伯太空望远镜也在L2点附近工作。

Dark energy 暗能量

In 1998 two teams studying distant exploding stars found that the expansion of the universe is speeding up, a discovery that earned the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. The cause is called dark energy. Current estimates say it makes up roughly two-thirds of the universe’s total energy, yet no one knows what it is.

1998年,两个研究遥远超新星的团队发现宇宙的膨胀在加快,这一发现获得了2011年诺贝尔物理学奖。导致加速的原因被称为暗能量。目前估计它约占宇宙总能量的三分之二,但没有人知道它究竟是什么。

Finding planets with gravity 用引力寻找行星

Astronomers have confirmed more than 6,000 planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets. Roman will look for many more with a technique called gravitational microlensing: when one star passes in front of another, its gravity bends and brightens the distant star’s light, and a planet around the nearer star leaves a tiny extra blip.

天文学家已确认超过6000颗太阳系外行星(系外行星)。罗曼将用“引力微透镜”技术寻找更多:当一颗恒星从另一颗恒星前方经过时,它的引力会弯曲并增亮远处恒星的光;若近处恒星周围有行星,就会留下一个很小的额外信号。
